DENMARK IS AMONGST DIGITAL COUNTRIES IN EUROPE
Denmark is one of the most digitized countries in the EU. This is clear from the latest Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2019, published by the European Commission. Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Kingdom occupy the top five places in the annual ranking.
DESI is divided into five main pillars: connectivity, human capital, use of Internet services, integration of digital technologies and digital public services. Denmark has improved in all five priorities.
Denmark is number one in two out of five columns
In the first pillar “connectivity”, Denmark is a leader among EU countries. Connectivity measures the provision of broadband infrastructure and its quality. Denmark has a 4G coverage of 99% and both broadband and mobile coverage are well above the European average.
The “human capital” is the second pillar that measures the possibility of using digital tools. Denmark’s digital skills have improved since 2018 and are above the EU average. The report highlights Denmark’s initiative to increase STEM candidates from 2019 to 2022 by annual investments of DKK 20 million (EUR 2.68 million). This is part of the goal of increasing the number of MINT candidates by 20% by 2028.
Denmark is the best country in Europe when it comes to using internet services. This is the third pillar. Almost all Danes (95%) regularly use the internet, reflecting the digital status of Denmark compared to the EU average of 83%. In addition, the report notes that only 2% of Danes have never used the Internet.
The fourth pillar “Integration of digital technologies” measures the digitization of companies and e-commerce. Denmark ranks fourth in the EU in this pillar. In particular, the DESI report highlights the integration of digital technology for small and medium-sized enterprises, with Denmark taking the lead in the parameter “online sales of SMEs”.
In the fifth pillar, Digital Public Services, Denmark is well above the EU average at 77.8 points, compared with 62.9 points in the EU. Digital public services measure the digitization of public services with a focus on e-government and e-health. The lucrative business environment was reiterated as Denmark offers world-class digital services to businesses – the best in Europe with a score of 100%.Tags: DENMARK, Digital Denmark
